Burbank on ethnography & the inter of personal

‘Everyone has likely experienced the slippages that occur in everyday social interaction when we attempt to transform the ideas of one persona into the understanding of another.

But beyond this, moving between Western academia and Indigenous remote community Australia, we enter into the realm of cultural difference and the necessity of cultural translation.

I illustrate these issues with a discussion of how I interpret and use “emotion talk” (Abu-Lughod and Lutz 1990, p. 14) to understanding something of the experience of people at Numbulwar’ (V. Burbank 2001, p. 12).
