Activists claim responsibility for attack on Macklin’s office – Anarchist news

I just learned of this incident at Jenny Macklin’s office in Melbourne on Wednesday last week.

I am surprised that the mainstream media did not cover the story given the Minister’s presence in the media last week and the activists’ reference to ‘ongoing waves of attacks at the hands of our colonial government, of this very office of “Indigenous Affairs.”

This was clearly not your everyday vandalism but an example of direct action** with a very clear message.

How long, I wonder, until the Federal Government realises it cannot claim to represent the majority of Australians and carry on treating Indigenous Australians the way that it has and continues to do.

‘Last Wednesday night we attacked the office of Australian Labour Party MP Jenny Macklin, who postures herself as Indigenous Affairs minister. We did this because the Australian government is a government of occupation and ongoing colonization of the Indigenous people of this country. Our actions are in solidarity with the Indigenous people who have been invaded, whose land has been stolen, who have been forcibly removed from their homelands, from their families, whose cultures and languages have been irreversibly damaged, and who are still experiencing ongoing waves of attacks at the hands of our colonial government, of this very office of “Indigenous Affairs”.

  1. the very similar stories everywhere!

  2. Hmm.

I think this is ‘propaganda by deed’ rather than ‘direct action’.

  3. That distinction is rather arbitrary or at least very subjective.

Direct action is any (violent or non-violent) activity or action undertaken by individuals or groups to achieve political, economic, or social goals outside of normal socio-political channels that rely on political mediation/representation. Striking is a form of direct action. Gandhi’s non-violent methods were a form of direct action.

Instead of waiting for the next election to cast a vote the individuals in question opted for an immediate form of direct action for the reasons they made clear in their statement. And they have claimed responsibility for their actions.

‘Propaganda by deed’ is, well, any form of action (‘deed’) designed or intended to influence the opinions or ideas of others – to propagate one’s own opinions or ideas. This is the very nature or business of politics and, for that matter Politics.

An impassioned debate could be described as a form of propaganda by deed (speech act). The mainstream media could be described as a form of propaganda by deed. So could the actions of the activists in question.
