Imprisonment rates worse than ever

‘Indigenous Australians now make up more than a quarter of the entire prison population in Australia despite representing only 2.5 per cent of Australia’s total population, a report by the highly respected Australian Institute of Health and Welfare has said.

Neil Gillespie of the Aboriginal Legal Rights Movement (ALRM) slammed the findings and warned he believed the number of Indigenous Australians was even worse than the report has estimated.

‘Nationally we believe the number is closer to 40 per cent,’ he said.

The shocking figures even using the Institute’s 25 per cent estimate means the rate of imprisonment for Indigenous Australians had jumped by more than 50 per cent in the past decade.’
