Macklin backs NLC on mining lease deal – ABC News

Indigenous Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin has dismissed the concerns of Arhnem Land residents who say they were not consulted about a mining lease.

Ms Macklin yesterday announced she had approved a 42-year deal between mining giant Rio Tinto and the Northern Land Council (NLC).

The lease covers an area of more than 22,000 hectares on the Gove Peninsula and takes in the Rio Tinto Alcan mining operations near the township of Nhulunbuy.
