For anyone interested in cross-cultural construals of the self and the relationship between one’s self and others I highly recommend:
Markus, H. & Kitayama S. 1991, ‘Culture and the Self: Implications for Cognition, Emotion, and Motivation’ (in) Psychological Review, Vol. 98 (2), pp. 224-253
It is by far the most impressive, sensible approach to cross-cultural ideas about personhood that I have come across. No parts of the self becoming detached and floating off and it has an exhaustive bibliography for further reading.
