91pc of young NT inmates are Indigenous: report

Article from ABC online by Melinda James:

A new report shows that 35 young Territorians were in detention and 91 per cent of them were Indigenous on an average day in 2007-08.

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare report found a 17 per cent increase in the number of Australian teenagers locked up in detention in the past four years.

Young Territorians in detention who have not yet been sentenced spend an average of 79 days locked up.

That is longer than anywhere else in the country but it has fallen since 2005.
