Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu has taken out the NT’s most prestigious music award for the second year running. This is not that surprising though – his self titled album Gurrumul is achingly beautiful. If you’ve not heard Gurrumul’s recordings – they are really something. Almost all the songs on the album are in Yolngu matha and many of them adaptations of shared ceremonial manikay, which makes it particularly special. It gives the listener a taste of the poetics of Yolngu song and ceremony. It would have to be one of my favourite albums of all time.
